Maintaining your scooter is one of the most important steps in keeping your electric scooter functioning properly. This helps keep it from breaking down on you, as well as prepping it for long term usage.

Scooter Maintenance 101

It’ll take some common sense, your owners manual and the following tools:

• Rolls of electrical tape and duct tape
• Phillips-head and flat-head screwdrivers
• Nylon cable ties
  
• 3/8″ drive metric socket set
  
• Short length of vacuum/fuel hose
  
• Pliers and wire cutters
  
• LED flashlight
  
• Set of metric wrenches
  
• Spark plug wrench and spare spark plug
  
• Short length of wire

With that being said you should always take your electric scooter to a local authorize dealer for all major repairs, just to be safe and not accidentally damage your vehicle.

Step 1. Check your tire air pressure

It’s very important to maintain proper air pressure in the tires of your electric scooter because it puts more pressure on your motor when your tires aren’t properly inflated. This also opens you up to the risk of breaking the air valve, or tearing the inner tube of your scooter. It should also be noted that small tires lose air quicker than larger ones so it’ll require frequent air pressure checks. Certain scooters do not need tire pressure checks because they are made of thick layers of material instead of an inflatable tire tube. Such as the new self balancing scooters or hover-boards.

Step 2. Maintaining proper charging etiquette

You should keep your battery charge as high as possible. If you’re running on gas, just make sure you have enough for the nearest gas station. It is EXTREMELY important to that we note, you can damage your scooter by charging it while the battery is hot. You should allow your battery a few hours to cool off after usage. You have to also keep in mind that over charging it isn’t good either.  That rule goes for any electronic, so avoid leaving your scooter plugged in unnecessarily. Depending on your battery size, your electric scooter can be running for 5 hours or more.

Step 3. Proper tension on the drive belt/chain

The tension must match the manufacturer’s recommended amount for the electric scooter to properly function. Google your brand’s recommended tension and make sure the belt/chain is tight, otherwise you are shortening the lifespan of your belt/chain. You run the risk of locking the wheel if the tension isn’t just right.

Step 4. Avoid wet surfaces

This one is self explanatory. Your electric scooter is made of electric parts which do not get along with water, mud, or any other liquid. Newer models of electric scooters (aka self balancing scooters) such as the CoolReall  also follow these steps to maintain their performance.

Step 5. Checking for loose cables or parts

After long periods of use your scooter will have moved around a lot and has the possibility of unplugging an important wire or unhinging an internal component. A quick way to check is to shake your scooter and listen for any clanking or questionable noises. Be very careful when opening your scooter. Check for any unplugged wires or components and secure them in place if possible.

Step 6. Cleaning your scooter
It’s important to unplug your scooter from its battery when you’re cleaning it. This prevents the risk of frying any of the electrical parts of your scooter. If you cannot find a way to unplug your scooter from its battery another solution is to ride your scooter until the battery runs out. Make sure to get all of the juice out. Do NOT use pressure washers, steam cleaners, or any other high pressure cleaner. A car wash sponge and some soap is enough to clean up your scooter. Overall, remember to follow all of our steps and that will help maintain it’s good shape and work right.
